Lojay Sets the Record Straight-Why Wealth Isn’t an Advantage in Nigerian Music

Lekan Osifeso Junior, better known as Lojay, has opened up about a common misconception in the Nigerian music scene that coming from a wealthy family gives you a leg up.

The singer argued the opposite: being wealthy can actually be a disadvantage for an artist in Nigeria.

In a recent interview with City 105.1 FM in Lagos, the Monalisa hitmaker shared his perspective on the challenges faced by musicians from affluent backgrounds.

“Nigerians like to ‘rich-shame,’” Lojay explained. “It’s not just in the music industry, either. People assume that if you’re from a rich family, you already have an advantage. But in reality, wealthy artists often face backlash and are seen as unworthy of support simply because they’re perceived to have everything handed to them.”

Lojay went on to say that, in his case, his talent speaks for itself, regardless of his upbringing. “I’m undeniably talented,” he stated with confidence. “People can’t really try to discredit me because of where I come from. If anyone wants to challenge me on the mic, I’m ready.”

Addressing the issue head-on, Lojay emphasized that he’s never used his family’s resources to boost his music career. “I haven’t done payola, and my parents never used their influence to make my music popular. If anything, my background has posed more challenges than advantages in the industry.”

It’s clear that for Lojay, his journey to success isn’t about his family’s wealth, it’s about his undeniable skill, hard work, and the passion he brings to his music.
