Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez expressed his concern towards the hierarchy over the club’s transfer strategy as the Red Devils have lost 2-nil to Atletico Madrid in Champions League.
The Argentine defender has questioned the decisions of his club’s executives in relation to their recruitment strategy in the past transfers windows, stating that it is not right for the squad’s competitive nature to face Europe’s elite.
Despite the club’s spending around £192 million during the summer transfer window, Manchester United continued their barren spell with five consecutive league match without a win.
The News Chronicle reports that Martinez called on football director Jason Wilcox to reinforce the squad after believing the club can do more to build on the progress made last season.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, Martinez said he expected greater support from the club’s leadership, while acknowledging that the players also needed to improve their performances.
He also questioned the tendency to change managers repeatedly, suggesting that problems within the club extended beyond the coaching position.
The defeat to Atletico was made even worse by Leny Yorro’s red card, while Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman scored the goals for the Spanish side.
With an upcoming tough Premier League match against Leeds United to look forward to, United boss Michael Carrick was unhappy with the result. Martinez said that they were a disappointment and that they need to get back to the spirit they had before.
They have been inconsistent of late and need to put in performances like the one against Liverpool if they are to challenge for the title.
