Life Has No Formula

I was talking to my kids the other day, and I found myself telling them how worried I was about my boss. He’d just had an eye operation, and I hadn’t heard from him in two days. He’s such a good man, the type who checks up on you even when he has his own storms. As I spoke to them, something struck me. You can be kind, disciplined, decent, blessed… and life will still throw you challenges you never saw coming.

It reminded me of a truth we don’t like to admit, life has no formula.

We’re raised to believe that if you do everything right, things will turn out right. But the older I get, the more I see how unpredictable life can be.

You can save diligently, invest wisely, eat clean, exercise, and still have an illness like cancer wipe away your plans. Someone else will devour icecream, suya, shawarma, and beer every day and still live to ninety, mocking every nutritionist and wellness coach.

I’ve seen well-mannered, gorgeous women longing for marriage, praying for companionship. Their opposites rude, chaotic, reckless are married and stressing men to the brink. I’ve seen men who have everything going for them brains, money, education, character. Yet they struggle in relationships. Meanwhile, the unserious jokers, the ones who barely have their shirts ironed, are married to calm, responsible women who even foot their bills.

Some of the best husbands are the ones getting cheated on. Some of the most loyal wives are fighting silent battles with side chicks who refuse to mind their business.

Adulthood has no manual. We’re all just experimenting. Sometimes you will ghost a good person for no reason. Sometimes you will be ghosted by someone who swore you were special. People call it karma, but most of the time, it’s just life rolling dice.

Life doesn’t reward perfection, it rewards timing, grace, and mystery.

You can follow every rule and still end up in a story you didn’t write.

The older you get, the more you realise discipline is not a guarantee and chaos is not a curse.

No matter how carefully you plan it, life will still edit your script.

Some people do everything wrong and win, some do everything right and bleed. That’s life.

Married women post the most seductive thirst traps. Married men are among the loneliest, most hunted human beings alive, the poachers who specialize in married men don’t sleep. Your favorite celebrity couple will divorce one day, and it won’t make sense. Meanwhile, that couple everyone thought would scatter in six months will still be going strong like Nigerians still waiting for NEPA to give us 24-hour light.

I know graduates with perfect grades who are broke and frustrated. Their brilliance became a burden. Their classmates who barely passed are thriving even in the most unexpected jobs. Some Master’s holders in STEM are quietly asking themselves if becoming bus conductors or keke riders is the next step. Hunger has a way of removing pride.

Some people don’t struggle at all. They post one picture of their assets, and rent plus upkeep is sorted. Men too have entered the industry. Lagos alone has an entire underground economy that will never make the news.

Blessings sometimes arrive looking like curses. What feels like bad luck today may turn into the best twist of your life tomorrow.

You can raise your children with love, principles, guidance, self-worth, and they’ll still lose their way for reasons you may never understand. Others who were raised in chaos and violence will grow up with gentleness in their hearts. Some siblings sacrifice everything for one another only to end up betrayed. Love doesn’t always return to the sender.

With life, anything goes.

Still, I’ll tell my kids and anyone who cares to listen to save money. Don’t gamble with the future. Work hard in school, even if school doesn’t guarantee success. Try marriage, if it works, beautiful. If it doesn’t, you’ll still survive. Eat healthy, follow the rules, be decent.

But keep one truth in your pocket. You can do everything right, and life can still bend you without warning, without mercy, without explanation.

The best people, the cleanest hearts, the most careful planners none of them can control outcomes.

Life moves the way it wants.

Life no dey behave like who get sense. E go embarrass you and still expect you to smile.

Effort is important, but luck and grace dey play their own politics behind the scenes.

Life no send your blueprint, it get it’s own agenda.

Nobody really has this thing figured out we’re all just packaging.

Life will humble you, dust you, reset you, and still ask if you’ve eaten.

Sometimes the blessing is hiding inside the heartbreak.

What you call a delay might be life saving you from a disaster you didn’t see.

We lose things we thought were permanent and gain things we never prayed for.

Every human being is carrying a private battle that perfect behaviour cannot prevent.

Success has many parents, but failure is an orphan everyone denies.

And all any of us can really do is show up fully, stay grateful, keep trying, and accept that nobody on this earth has it figured out.

At the end of the day, we’re all just navigating grace and guesswork.

Life won’t always make sense, but it will always make a point.

You can prepare for everything except the moment life changes its mind.

In the end, nobody wins life we just experience it.

Life has no formula, and that’s the only formula that has never failed.
