Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has questioned the absence of President Bola Tinubu from the United Nations General Assembly, asking pointedly: “Where is Nigeria’s President?”
In a statement made available to The News Chronicle, Obi made the remarks while reacting to an address delivered by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, which he described as a demonstration of what effective leadership can achieve.
According to Obi, Mahama’s address and leadership have drawn international commendation, underscoring the importance of competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character” in national leadership.
He contrasted Ghana’s participation at the global forum with Nigeria’s representation, noting that Tinubu has been absent from the UN General Assembly for three consecutive years.
“Where is the President of Africa’s most populous nation, a country of more than 200 million people, more than Ghana, whose leader has been absent from the global stage for three consecutive UNGAs?” Obi asked.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s President should be representing the country and providing leadership for Africa on the international stage, particularly at a time when the nation is grappling with significant domestic and international challenges.
While acknowledging that Vice President Kashim Shettima attended the global gathering, Obi maintained that questions remain over the President’s absence.
“Although our Vice President, Kashim Shettima, was present, the question remains: Where is the President?” he asked.
Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to continue praying for the President’s return and for his leadership in addressing the challenges confronting the country.
