Late Muñoz Goal Lifts Colombia past DR Congo in World Cup Clash

Colombia secured a narrow 1-0 victory over DR Congo in a closely fought Group K encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Daniel Muñoz scoring the decisive goal in the 76th minute.

The match, which was played on Wednesday at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Guadalajara, Mexico, displayed both teams’ strong defensive organisation and determination, resulting in a tightly balanced contest for most of the match.

Colombia controlled more of the possession and created more attacking opportunities, while DR Congo relied on quick counter-attacks and a compact defensive structure to contain their opponents.

The first half ended goalless, with neither side able to create clear-cut scoring chances.

Colombia continued to apply pressure after the break, with Juan Quintero and the attacking players pushing forward, but DR Congo’s defence remained disciplined and dealt with the threats.

The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute when Quintero delivered a well-placed pass to Muñoz, who calmly finished to give Colombia the lead.

The goal forced DR Congo to adopt a more attacking approach as they searched for an equaliser, but Colombia’s defence held firm to preserve the advantage until the final whistle.

The match was also marked by physical exchanges, with Colombia’s Jhon Lucumí and Jefferson Lerma, alongside DR Congo’s Charles Pickel, receiving yellow cards for fouls and unsporting conduct.

The win boosted Colombia’s chances of reaching the knockout stage, while DR Congo will need a strong performance in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Colombia will face Portugal in their next Group K fixture, while DR Congo will take on Uzbekistan on June 27.
