Popular Nigerian doctor and health advocate on X, Dr. Olufunmilayo, has expressed shock and outrage over the reported death of fast-rising Nigerian singer Ifunanya Nwangene, who allegedly died after being bitten by a cobra inside her Abuja residence.
The singer, popularly known as Nanya_music or Soprano Queen, was a well-known chorister in Abuja.
The News Chronicle gathered that the budding artiste reportedly died on Saturday, January 31, following the snakebite incident in her home.
Videos circulating online show a snake catcher holding a cobra believed to have been found in her room.
In the footage, voices are heard suggesting there could be more snakes in the house, as the late singer had earlier complained that she had seen “a grown one” in her apartment.
Reacting to the tragedy, Dr. Olufunmilayo noted that snakebite deaths have been virtually eliminated in many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom where he currently practices.
According to him, the last recorded snakebite death in the UK occurred about 50 years ago, adding that fewer than 15 people have died from snakebites in the country over the past 145 years.
He questioned why such a preventable death should still occur in Nigeria in 2026, describing the incident as a devastating reflection of systemic healthcare failures.
