Lagos to Vaccinate 18 Million Residents Against Preventable Diseases

—

The Lagos State Government is set to launch a major vaccination campaign aimed at protecting approximately 18 million residents from preventable diseases, starting on October 19.

This initiative, known as the Non-Polio Supplemental Immunisation, was announced during a media briefing led by Dr. Abimbola Bowale, the Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board.

The campaign will take place across all 57 Local Government Development Agencies in Lagos, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Vaccines to be administered include the Yellow Fever Booster for individuals aged nine months to 44 years, alongside measles vaccinations for children aged nine to 18 months, and HPV vaccines for those between nine and 14 years old.

Dr. Bowale stressed that achieving herd immunity requires at least 95% of eligible individuals to be vaccinated against measles and 80% against yellow fever.

He also urged journalists to play a pivotal role in informing the public about the importance and safety of vaccinations, as well as the benefits of the upcoming campaign.

Dr. Akinpelu Adetola, the Immunisation Programme Coordinator for Lagos, noted that the vaccination drive is crucial to combat the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles, yellow fever, and cholera, which have been on the rise in recent years.

Addressing the immunity gaps in communities through this comprehensive immunisation effort is seen as a key strategy in safeguarding public health in Lagos.
