Lagos Seals Ikoyi Property Over Alleged Discharge of Untreated Sewage into Canal

The Lagos State Government has sealed a property in Ikoyi for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into a canal through a non-functional sewage treatment plant.

The property, located at No. 5 Manuwa Street, Ikoyi, was sealed on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office following complaints from residents and investigations confirming the environmental violation.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a post on his official X account.

According to Wahab, the property was shut down over the “deliberate and continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional and moribund sewage treatment plant.”

He added that the premises were also kept in an unsanitary condition, resulting in offensive odor, environmental pollution and potential public health risks.

The commissioner said the enforcement action followed public complaints and subsequent investigations that established the reported infractions.

Wahab urged residents, facility managers and property owners to comply with approved wastewater management standards to safeguard public health and protect the environment.

He warned that anyone found in violation of the state’s environmental regulations would face appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution under the law.

The commissioner reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to strict enforcement of environmental laws to ensure a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for residents.
