Lagos DSVA Promises Swift Action After Video of Lawyer Opeyemi Mabawonku Assaulting Wife Goes Viral

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has vowed to take immediate action following the release of a disturbing CCTV video showing Nigerian lawyer Opeyemi Mabawonku allegedly verbally and physically assaulting his wife, Abiola.

The footage, dated October 27, 2024, has ignited outrage on social media, with public figures and concerned Nigerians calling for accountability and support for the victim.

In the video, Mabawonku, reportedly a manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Nigeria, is seen engaging in a heated argument with his wife over suspicions of infidelity. He hurls a barrage of insults, threats, and objects in her direction.

At one point, Mabawonku is heard yelling, “I showed you the message and told you there was nothing between both of us. Are you unfortunate? I am warning you.” He threatens her further, saying, “If you do not call anybody, you are a bastard. Are you crazy? Do you want me to lose my job?”

Throughout the footage, Abiola can be seen attempting to de-escalate the situation. She warns her husband to be mindful of their children’s presence, saying, “Be careful. You know the children are here. Whatever you do here, the children are watching. Do not touch me. I will call my dad. I want to make you lose your job? Or is it the consequence of your immoral attitude?”

Mabawonku, visibly agitated, sends their daughters out of the room before continuing his assault, both verbal and physical. In Yoruba, he calls Abiola a “mad and foolish woman,” saying, “Shey orie buru ni?” The confrontation escalates as he throws objects toward her, forcing her to duck to avoid injury.

Abiola, formerly the lead HR at Nigerian fintech giant Paystack, reportedly lost her job amid an increasingly toxic marriage. The situation has reached a breaking point, and she now risks losing her marriage as well. Many social media users, shocked by the footage, have voiced strong support for Abiola, urging her to prioritize her and her children’s safety.

The video has prompted a swift response from the Lagos State DSVA. The agency issued a public statement acknowledging the role of vigilant citizens in alerting them to the incident and pledging to take prompt action. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out or tagged us regarding this video. We appreciate your vigilance in bringing this to our attention. Now that we’re aware, we’re taking swift action to address the matter appropriately,” read their message.
