This follows the launch of demolition activities attended by Minister David Umahi. Landmark Group, with over 80 businesses and 4,000 jobs, received a sudden eviction notice, causing tension and pleading for reconsideration. Though ‘the compensation committee,’ led by Engr. Despite claims by Umahi that only 15 meters of shoreline will be affected, many businesses have been affected, with staff members expressing sorrow and uncertainty about their future.

2. Though the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) previously claimed that fuel scarcity issues would be resolved, Nigerians in Abuja, Lagos, and other parts of the country continued to struggle to obtain fuel, with many filling stations remaining closed over the weekend. The situation has gotten worse with Logistics issues and reduced depot supply. Furthermore, directives prioritizing fuel supply to Abuja resulted in scarcity in Lagos and the southwest. The scarcity extended to Ogun, Oyo, Osun, and border communities. Black market activities have surged nationwide with prices soaring to as high as N800 per litre in some areas. Oil dealers have resumed loading petrol at jetties in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Warri to address shortages nationwide. Meanwhile, President Tinubu defended the removal of petrol subsidies and exchange rate unification during the World Economic Forum meeting in Riyadh, stating Nigeria needed not to go bankrupt.

4. Over the weekend, the Nigerian naira strengthened slightly against the US dollar, breaking below the N1,300 resistance level at the parallel market, and settling at N1270-75. This marks a 10% increase compared to Friday’s close at N1,400. The naira’s quick gain followed a surge in demand for dollars in the parallel market, combined with slow forex disbursement to Bureau De Change (BDC) operators by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Currency dealers attribute the moderation in the naira’s bullish momentum to the CBN’s sluggish pace of disbursement. Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensified its crackdown on currency speculators, arresting 34 alleged speculators and blocking 1,146 accounts linked to ongoing investigations for forex fraud. The Nigeria Senate’s Committee on Finance called for coordinated efforts to save and maintain naira stability.
