Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé’s X (formerly Twitter) account was compromised overnight on August 28, 2024. The hack led to a series of provocative posts that stirred considerable controversy.
The hacker took advantage of Mbappé’s platform to promote a cryptocurrency token named ‘MBAPPE,’ which saw its value skyrocket to tens of millions before collapsing. The account also featured several inflammatory tweets.
Among the most eye-catching posts were those praising Manchester United. One tweet proclaimed: “Manchester is Red,” while another referenced the notorious United social media account @UTDTrey. The hacker also stirred up the football world by declaring: “Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest football player of all time. The midget [Lionel Messi] is NOT my goat.”
Further posts targeted other Premier League teams, including Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, though these were quickly deleted. The rapid dissemination of these tweets prompted widespread backlash from social media users.
User KM (@Kylian) criticized the situation, saying, “Where the —- is his PR team, this is unacceptable.” Meanwhile, @antcatalanotto speculated on Mbappé’s allegiance, “Mbappe is a United fan I knew it all along,” and Voetbal (@Voetballl_) took a jab at Mbappé’s recent performances: “Hacked before he could score a La Liga goal smh.”
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti addressed concerns about Mbappé’s form, stating, “His last goal was on August 14th. It has only been two weeks since, that is no reason to worry. Neither we are not worried as a club, nor him.”
This is not the first instance of Mbappé’s social media being hacked. In late 2019, his Twitter account was similarly compromised by a group that changed his display name and bio without posting any content.
Mbappé prepares to return to action with Real Madrid in their La Liga clash against Las Palmas later today.
