The Oyo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures, suspend late-night activities and fence their premises in response to the rising wave of abductions and kidnappings.
The directive was contained in a communiqué issued on Wednesday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
Expressing concern over the worsening security situation, the association urged churches to become more vigilant and proactive in safeguarding worshippers and church property.
“Due to the incessant cases of abduction and kidnapping in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security conscious by strategically deploying security personnel and installing appropriate electronic security devices within their premises and surrounding areas,” the communiqué stated.
The association also directed churches to intensify prayers for the safe release of kidnapped victims and suspend late-night physical activities until the security situation improves.
CAN further advised churches without perimeter fences and gates to prioritize such projects as part of efforts to enhance security.
It urged church leaders to immediately engage trained security personnel to monitor and protect worship centers, especially during services and other large gatherings.
The body also directed churches to conduct thorough background checks and security assessments of guards and other personnel engaged in essential services.
In addition, churches were advised against allowing strangers to sleep in church auditoriums or on church premises.
Beyond the church community, CAN called on residents to exercise caution in their movements and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly at night.
The association also urged the public to comply with the executive order issued by Governor Seyi Makinde, which prohibits commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m. across the state.
While sympathizing with families of victims currently held captive by kidnappers, CAN acknowledged efforts by both the state and federal governments to secure the release of abductees, particularly in relation to the recent incident in Orire Local Government Area.
The association, however, called on authorities to intensify efforts to secure the freedom of all victims and reunite them with their families without delay.
It also urged the government to exercise caution in the dissemination of security-related information to the public.
“CAN, Oyo State chapter, will continue to collaborate with government at all levels to promote peace, unity and stability in the state,” the communiqué added.
