Two unidentified occupants of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) were Saturday afternoon, kidnapped by gunmen, along Ifite road in Awka, close to Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s back gate.
The incident, which was captured live on camera by some students residing in a nearby hostel, lends credence to the worsening case of insecurity in the town.
Last week, three persons, suspected to be cultists were killed on Sunday, while one person was allegedly killed on Monday.
The kidnap incident video showed the hooded gunmen, blocking the SUV and ordering the occupants of the vehicle at gunpoint, to step out, and into their black Sienna vehicle.
A source in the area, where the incident happened said the men shot into the air as they made away with the victims, while one of them also took the victim’s car.
Mr Lawrence Ibemesi, a resident of Awka said: “We don’t know what is happening in Awka any longer. Security people need to sit up because we can no longer understand these killings and kidnappings here and there.”
However, in a reaction on Sunday, when TNC correspondent sought his response, the Police Spokesperson in the State, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the kidnap of the unidentified SUV driver.
Ikenga said: “The Commissioner of Police Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam states that efforts are ongoing to arrest the assailants and rescue the victims of the abduction.
“The incident happened by 2pm on the 13th of July, 2027, and was captured in a video along Ifite – Amansea road, Awka.
“Police responding team recovered the victims’ vehicles and has emplaced Joint Security Measures/Operational positioning to forestall such or related incident in the State.”
