Kerosene and Cooking Gas Prices Increased by 2.09% and 1.81%, Respectively

For Nigerian households, there is still no relief as the cost of kerosene and cooking
gas increased by 2.09 and 1.81 percent in September, respectively.

In its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) and National Household Kerosene Price
Watch for September 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed that the
average retail price for refueling a 5 kg cooking gas cylinder increased by 1.81 percent on a
monthly basis from N4,115.32 in August 2023 to N4,189.96 in September 2023.

Additionally, the price per liter of kerosene that consumers paid during the same period was N1,299.03,
representing a 2.09 percent increase from N1,272.40 in August 2023. However, according to the NBS report, the price of cooking gas decreased 6.36 percent from N4,474.48 in September 2022 on an annual basis.

According to a state profile analysis, Kwara had the highest average cost of N4, 866.60 to
refill a 5-kg cooking gas cylinder, followed by Benue at N4, 789.26, and Adamawa at N4,
785.71.

Conversely, the lowest price was recorded in Ondo State, at N3, 364.62, and the highest
prices in Ekiti and Edo, at N3, 450.06 and N3, 626.17, respectively.
Additionally, the average retail cost to refill a 12.5-kilogram gas cylinder went up by 0.58
percent from N9, 194.41 in August 2023 to N9, 247.40 in September 2023. This increase
occurred on a monthly basis. This decreased from N9,906.44 in September 2022 by 6.65%
year over year.

According to a state profile research, Cross River had the highest average retail price of
N10, 203.13 for refueling a 12.5 kg LNG cylinder, followed by N9, 967.11 in Ogun and N9,
950.15 in Nasarawa. On the other hand, Adamawa had the lowest average price, N7,604.29; Borno and Gombe
came in second and third, N8, 113.69, and N8, 188.75, respectively.

According to the NBS, the average retail price per liter of household kerosene increased by
37.13 percent from N947.30 in September 2022 to N947.30 in September 2023.
According to a state profile research, Adamawa had the highest average price per liter in
September 2023 at N1, 746.05, followed by Abuja at N1,492.50 and Cross-River at N1,
541.67.

Conversely, Jigawa scored the lowest price at N1, 104.78, followed by Enugu at N1, 134.52
and Kano at N1, 142.27. The North-East reported the highest average retail price per liter of household kerosene, N1,390.67, followed by the South-East with N1, 368.49, and the North-West with N1,190.81, according to zone-by-zone research.

In September 2023, consumers paid an average retail price of N4,379.31 per gallon of
household kerosene, which is a 0.64 percent increase from N4,351.53 in August 2023.
This grew by 35.32 percent year over year from N3, 236.27 in September 2022.

According to a state profile analysis, Lagos had the highest average retail price of N5,
350.00 per gallon of household kerosene, followed by N5, 000.00 in Katsina and N4, 997.47
in Borno.

Conversely, Delta had the lowest price at N2, 956.18, which was followed by N3, 296.02 and
N3, 712.50 for Rivers and Oyo. Zone-by-zone analysis revealed that, at N4,712.01, the North-East had the highest average retail price per gallon of household kerosene, followed by the South-East at N4,646.63, and
the South-South at N3,769.59.
