Kepa Error Hands Man City Carabao Cup Glory as Arsenal Gamble Falls Short

Arsenal’s Carabao Cup quest collapsed after a costly goalkeeping mistake handed Manchester City a 2-0 win in the final, calling into question manager Mikel Arteta’s player selection.

Starting Kepa Arrizabalaga over first-choice David Raya was a decision Arteta made that caused questions before the start of the game. The decision was crucial in the second half when Kepa missed a cross from Rayan Cherki and pushed the ball toward Nico O’Reilly, who coolly opened the scoring for City.

The error altered the momentum at a pivotal moment, just as Arsenal were making tactical adjustments, setting the stage for City to win the final.

Arteta stuck to his decision even if it did not turn out well, saying the goalie merited his position after showing up during the club’s cup run. He argued that selection decisions should represent performance and fairness, noting that mistakes are part of the game.

Though Arteta’s choice was based on loyalty and consistency, the high stakes of a final have sparked debate over whether emotion should take precedence over performance in serious situations. Critics contend that cup finals call for the most formidable possible lineup independent of past involvement in the contest.

Manchester City made the most of a key moment to raise the trophy, whereas Arsenal reflects on what could have been.
