In a significant move to bolster youth entrepreneurship, the Kebbi State Government has officially handed over a GSM Plaza valued at N300 million to the Association of Handset Dealers and Technicians.
The ceremony took place in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday and was presided over by Governor Nasir Idris.
Governor Idris highlighted that this initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to foster entrepreneurship and generate employment opportunities for young men and women.
He acknowledged that while the government, at any level, cannot provide direct employment for everyone, it can support people in becoming self-sufficient through entrepreneurship.
The governor stressed that the current administration is dedicated to implementing strategies that empower citizens to become self-employed, particularly through skill acquisition.
“It is a well-known fact that the government cannot provide jobs for everyone. Therefore, our focus is on finding ways to help people become gainfully self-employed through skill acquisition programs,” Governor Idris said.
He further mentioned that the state has established various skill acquisition centers across Kebbi to encourage self-reliance.
According to Governor Idris, individuals who are self-employed often have the potential to generate more income in a week than a government worker might earn in a month.
This highlights the significance of entrepreneurship in improving the economic standing of citizens and reducing dependency on government jobs.
Governor Idris also explained the background behind the purchase of the plaza. The building was initially constructed by Olumbo Limited, a company that had faced challenges with its tenants and had requested them to vacate the premises.
Recognizing that the eviction could lead to significant losses for the tenants, including their capital and businesses, the state government decided to intervene by purchasing the property.
The governor clarified that this acquisition was made on behalf of the state, and not for his personal benefit.
By taking this step, the Kebbi State Government aims to provide a stable environment for members of the Association of Handset Dealers and Technicians to continue their businesses without disruption.
This initiative also aligns with the state’s broader goals of promoting entrepreneurship, supporting local businesses, and creating sustainable job opportunities for the youth of Kebbi.
