Kebbi Area Command of Customs reopens border for global trade

On Friday, March 15, 2024, Comptroller Iheanacho Ojike, the newly appointed Customs Area Controller (CAC) for the Kebbi Command, followed the instructions of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi (MFR), and reopened the Kamba Border for international trade.

This information was shared in a press release signed by Mohammed Salisu, the Superintendent of Customs and Public Relations Officer for the Kebbi Area Command, on March 18, 2024, at the Command’s Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.

During the reopening ceremony, which took place in the presence of various stakeholders, including the district head of Kamba, Mamuda Fana, and representatives from sister agencies, Comptroller Ojike highlighted the importance of the Kamba Border in generating revenue for Kebbi.

He emphasized that the border’s reopening aimed to promote legitimate trade that contributes positively to the nation’s development, rather than allowing illegal imports that harm the economy and compromise national security.

Comptroller Ojike assured stakeholders of the Command’s readiness to facilitate fair trade and operate within the boundaries of the law to streamline business activities across the Kamba Border.

He stressed the importance of complying with Customs laws, making accurate declarations, and paying appropriate duties to the Federal Government.

It was noted that the exportation of grains from the country remains prohibited due to the scarcity of food.

Mamuda Fana, the district head of Kamba, expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts, emphasizing that the reopening of the border brought hope to the people of Kebbi engaged in cross-border and small-scale businesses in Kamba town. He pledged to discourage illegitimate trade among his people.

Additionally, Comptroller Ojike paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gwandu, Major General Muhammed Iliyasu (Rtd), seeking his blessings and collaboration as the Royal father of the state.

He also visited other sister agencies to seek their cooperation in promoting commerce across borders, combating smuggling activities, and ensuring the security of host communities.
