Katsina Varsity Workers Sheathe Strike Sword

Academic and non-academic workers across Katsina State–owned tertiary institutions have called off their two-week warning strike, opting to return to classrooms and offices after fresh interventions cooled frayed nerves.

The decision was announced on Saturday in Katsina by the Chairman of the Joint Consultative Forum of the institutions, Dr. Muhammad Nasir-Gidado.

The industrial action, which began on January 12, 2026, was triggered by what the forum described as the government’s cold shoulder to a basket of unresolved demands.

Nasir-Gidado said the grievances include the failure to approve and implement 35 per cent and 25 per cent salary increments for staff of the affected institutions.

He added, “We also demanded for the immediate implementation of proper placement for Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) non-migrated staff.

“And also unsympathetic increase in students’ registration fees without consideration of current economic situation which lowers students’ enrolment among others.

“Following the intervention of relevant key stakeholders and concerned respected indigenes of the state, the Forum wishes to announce the suspension of this warning strike.”

According to him, all parties have agreed to return to the negotiating table immediately to iron out the outstanding issues.

He said, “In view of the above, we’re calling on all our respected members to resume their primary assignments with the usual dedication and commitment to duty with immediate effect.

“The affected Institutions are, Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Isa Kaita College of Education Dutsin-ma, and Yusuf Bala Usman College of Education and Legal Studies, Daura.

“And also College of Nursing Sciences (Katsina and Malumfashi Campuses), College of Health Science and Technology (Daura/Kankia campuses), and Institute of Technology and Management.”

Thanking parents and students for their patience, Nasir-Gidado assured that the forum remains steadfast and will continue to press its demands until the knots are fully untied.
