Kano women advocate for greater representation in governance on International Women’s Day

Invest in Women and Foster Inclusion

A group of women in Kano State, Nigeria, walked to the Government House on International Women’s Day. They want more women to be involved in making decisions in the government.

They also want better opportunities for girls to go to school and get good jobs. The leader of the group, Jamila Musa, said that even though more girls are going to school now, there are still some problems. Not all girls can go to good schools, which makes it hard for them to get good jobs.

They talked about how women need more help to be successful in Kano. Dr Mustapha Yahaya, who works for a group called Dispute Resolution and Development Initiative, said they gave tools to 300 young people and women in Kano. These tools can help them learn skills to get better jobs.

The government also wants to help more girls learn to read and write. They hope to have more than 60% of girls in school by the time the governor’s first term is over.

The governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, couldn’t be there, but he sent his chief of staff to talk to the women. He said the government is doing more to help women.

They are giving women jobs in the government and helping them start businesses. The women in Kano want everyone to know that even though things are getting better, there is still a lot of work to do to make things fair for women and girls.
