The Kano State government on Thursday began distributing N1 billion worth of free fertilizers to smallholder farmers across the state.
Governor Abba Yusuf, who presided over the distribution ceremony at the Government House in Kano, said that this initiative fulfills a key campaign promise to enhance livelihoods by investing in agribusiness.
During his campaign for the 2023 elections, Governor Yusuf pledged to drive agricultural transformation by providing high-quality and affordable agricultural inputs. This commitment was detailed in his 70-page blueprint titled “My Commitment for Kano.”
The governor explained that the N1 billion worth of NPK fertilizers would be distributed free of charge to 52,800 smallholder farmers across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas.
The fertilizers were produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), to reduce production costs and enhance food security.
In addition to the free fertilizers, Governor Yusuf announced that the State Executive Council had approved the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers to be sold to farmers at subsidized rates.
This intervention is intended to support farmers struggling with the high costs of inputs and labor, enabling them to increase their productivity.
Governor Yusuf assured the public of the government’s commitment to maintaining food production through the regular supply of fertilizers from KASCO.
He emphasized that KASCO and other state manufacturing centers are being strengthened to boost revenue flow and stimulate the state economy.
The beneficiaries of this initiative include women farmers and individuals living with disabilities, each of whom will receive 25 kilograms of NPK fertilizer.
