Kano Power Crisis Deepens as Deputy Governor Abdussalam Abruptly Resigns

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office, bowing out weeks after the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him.

His resignation was confirmed on Friday in a statement issued by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement hereby informs the public, the people of Kano State, and Nigerians at large that the Deputy Governor has tendered his resignation,” the statement read.

The development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly, on March 5, served Abdussalam with an impeachment notice over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust, The News  Chronicle  gathered .

The allegations stem from a petition by the state executive accusing him of irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.

Political undercurrents also trailed the crisis, with Abdussalam reportedly coming under pressure to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)—a move he declined, unlike Governor Abba Yusuf.

Despite stepping down, the Kwankwasiyya movement insisted the resignation should not be misconstrued as an admission of guilt.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not constitute an admission of the allegations. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and stands by his record of integrity and service,” the statement added.
