Kano LGA Secretariat set ablaze as unidentified assailants target recently reinstated chairman

A group of people, who the Kano State Police Command called “faceless intruders,” attacked the secretariat of Gwale local government area in the State.

This happened after the reinstatement of Khalid Ishaq, the embattled chairman of the LGA, on Wednesday.

Earlier that Wednesday morning, part of the secretariat building had caught fire. Khalid Ishaq, elected chairman during the past administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was suspended by the Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) for three months.

The suspension came after Councillors accused him of illegal land sales.

After the three-month suspension, Khalid sought legal redress, and the court ruled in his favor, ordering his reinstatement.

Seeking protection, he resumed office at the secretariat. However, during his reinstatement, a group of people tried to cause chaos, leading to the destruction of 17 offices and several vehicles.

The police have promised to find those responsible. Currently, armed security personnel have taken over the Gwale Local Government Secretariat, putting activities on hold.

The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident and urged calm as investigations are ongoing.

They explained that the suspension period had elapsed, and there was a court order for the chairman’s resumption.

Earlier in the morning, a fire outbreak damaged three offices in the secretariat, with the cause under investigation.

To prevent further incidents, the police provided security for the chairman and the council headquarters. Other security officials, including DSS and NSCDC, were also present.

Unfortunately, later in the day, faceless intruders forcefully entered the secretariat, creating chaos and throwing stones.

The police dispersed them using tear smoke, and the situation is now under control as investigations continue.

“In the overall, the situation is adequately under control as investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incidences is ongoing,” the Police statement said.
