In a major political development, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, according to credible sources.
Governor Yusuf, who is currently the only NNPP governor in the country, is said to be in Abuja finalising arrangements ahead of the high-profile defection.
Sources familiar with the move disclosed that the governor will be formally received by Vice President Kashim Shettima and the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, during the official process in the federal capital.
Ahead of the defection, key APC figures in Kano State have reportedly been placed on alert. Former Kano State Governor and APC leader, Abdullahi Ganduje, was said to have been recalled from a trip to Dubai, while the APC State Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, was directed to cut short his Umrah pilgrimage.
It was further gathered that the state party chairman will issue the APC membership card to Governor Yusuf at his Diso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area later in the week, formally sealing his entry into the ruling party.
If completed, the defection is expected to significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape, strengthen the APC’s position ahead of future elections, and deal a major blow to the NNPP’s national standing.
More details are expected to emerge following Monday’s anticipated formal announcement.
