A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a major food supplier to Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State, Hamatu Modu, to 40 years imprisonment over terrorism-related activities.
The presiding judge, Justice Binta Fatima Nyako, handed down the sentence after Modu confessed in open court to supplying food items and information to the insurgents.
He was arraigned by the Federal Government, through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, on four counts.
Modu pleaded guilty to all counts. The Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), led the prosecution.
In her judgment, Justice Nyako sentenced him to 10 years on each count. However, following a plea by the defence counsel, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning the convict will serve 10 years in prison.
In a related development, the court also sentenced another food supplier, Isah Ali, to 10 years imprisonment for similar offences in Borno State. His jail term is to take effect from three years ago when he was arrested and placed in detention.
Ali also admitted to committing the offence as charged.
Justice Nyako further ordered that both convicts undergo rehabilitation and de-radicalization programs after serving their prison terms. The court directed the Federal Ministry of Interior to determine the correctional facilities where the two men will serve their sentences
