JUST IN: Starmer Officially Becomes UK’s New Prime Minister

Reports have it that Sir Keir Starmer is now officially the UK’s new Prime Minister after his Labour Party won a landslide victory in Thursday’s general election.

 

Starmer arrived at the Buckingham Palace alongside his wife for his audience with King Charles around 11:58am.

King Charles will officially ask him to form a new government, as he takes over after former PM, Rishi Sunak resigned from his position.

 

Starmer officially becomes PM after meeting with King Charles who asked him to form a new government.

He will now address the nation at 10 Downing Street to unveil his programmes and vision to take UK to the next level.

 

As Starmer was with the King in the palace, a cavalcade of Labour supporters had lined Downing Street, ready to cheer as he arrived as new PM.

Meanwhile, the Labour supporters in the street were being handed Union flags, in a direct replica of Tony Blair’s arrival in No 10 in 1997. They are also being handed the flags of Scotland and Wales.

 

This is a heavily choreographed moment. But there’s a crackle of anticipation because this is a historic moment too.

Earlier, the Buckingham Palace had confirmed Sunak’s resignation as UK Prime Minister.

Sunak had arrived the Palace 10:57am to meet King Charles to officially tender his resignation to pave way for Keir Starmer to become the new PM.

The right honourable Rishi Sunak MP had an audience of the King this morning and tendered his resignation as prime minister and first lord of the Treasury, which his majesty was graciously pleased to accept.” A statement from the palace read.

It was gathered that after his resignation, Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty left Buckingham Palace.
