The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has retracted a previous announcement concerning Starlink, the satellite internet service provider.
The NCC’s media department issued a statement clarifying that the prior communication was a mistake and urged media outlets to remove any related articles.
“Kindly note that this press statement on Starlink was issued in error. It is hereby WITHDRAWN. If already published, kindly BRING DOWN,” the message, signed by the NCC’s Manager of Media Relations, Kunle Azeez, stated.
Initially, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, indicated that the commission intended to impose penalties on Starlink for implementing a significant price increase without prior approval.
Starlink recently raised its monthly subscription fee by 97%, from N38,000 to N75,000, affecting both existing users and new customers.
Additionally, the cost of the installation kit surged by 34%, increasing from N440,000 to N590,000.
The NCC emphasized that it had not sanctioned this price hike.
Muoka expressed disappointment over Starlink’s decision to adjust its pricing unilaterally, noting that the company had submitted a request for a price increase, which the NCC had not yet authorized.
