The Kogi State High Court has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media report claiming it ordered the deregistration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement issued on Thursday in Lokoja, the court’s Chief Information Officer, Saqeeb Saeed, clarified that the court neither heard nor delivered judgment in any case relating to the registration or deregistration of the NDC or any other political party in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the misleading publication was accompanied by photographs of the Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Majebi, and former Governor Yahaya Bello, creating what the court described as the false impression that the alleged ruling originated from the High Court.
The court said it would ordinarily not respond to such reports but was compelled to issue the clarification to correct the record and prevent the spread of misinformation.
It warned that the false publication had the potential to undermine public confidence in the judiciary and damage the integrity and reputation of the courts.
The High Court urged members of the public, particularly social media users and content creators, to verify facts before publishing information that could mislead the public.
It also cautioned that the circulation of false reports intended to tarnish the image of judges, the High Court of Justice, or any court under its administrative jurisdiction would no longer be tolerated.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the court called on the public to disregard the viral report, stressing that it remains dedicated to dispensing justice fairly, diligently and without fear or favour.
