Voting is underway in Kano State’s local government elections, though federal security agencies, including the police, are noticeably absent at polling stations.
Instead, security is being handled by the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA) and local vigilante groups.
In various parts of the state, election materials are being distributed, and voting is taking place across all 44 local government areas.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed confidence in his party’s chances, citing strong public support.
The election process, however, has been marked by legal controversies. A Federal High Court initially attempted to stop the election due to concerns about the legitimacy of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC). Later, a state high court ruled in favor of proceeding with the elections.
