JUST IN: Court Orders INEC to Deregister ADC, Four Other Political Parties

—

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over their failure to meet constitutional performance requirements.

Delivering judgment on Monday, June 15, 2026, Justice Peter Lifu directed INEC to remove the ADC, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) from the register of political parties.

The suit was instituted by a group of former lawmakers who asked the court to interpret Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution regarding the deregistration of underperforming political parties.

They argued that the affected parties neither secured at least 25 per cent of votes in any state during the 2023 presidential election nor won elective positions thereafter, thereby failing to satisfy constitutional thresholds for continued registration.

In his ruling, Justice Lifu upheld the plaintiffs’ arguments and ordered the parties to cease all political activities, including participation in elections, primaries, rallies, and other party operations, pending compliance with the court’s directive.
