A Jos Area Court has sentenced a man, Felix Obed, to 18 months’ imprisonment for unlawfully entering premises and stealing a door valued at N55,000.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Judge Hannatu Ashom handed down the sentence after the defendant admitted guilt to the charges brought against him.
The court, however, provided the convict with the option of paying fines in place of serving the jail terms.
For the trespass charge, he may pay N60,000 or serve six months imprisonment, while the theft charge attracts a fine of N70,000 or 12 months imprisonment. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, ASP Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the matter was reported at the “A” Division Police Station on April 24 by Mr. Adekera Shighekuma.
Gokwat stated that the complainant alleged that Obed unlawfully entered his company’s premises and carted away a door worth N55,000.
The prosecutor further disclosed that the defendant admitted committing the offence during police interrogation.
According to him, the offences violate relevant provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, 2017.
