Jordan and Egypt Reluctant to Take in Refugees from Gaza

Following a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, King Abdullah said at a news conference that Jordan will not open its borders to refugees from Gaza seeking solace.

“That is a red line because I think that is the plan by certain of the usual suspects to try and create de facto issues on the ground. No refugees in Jordan, no refugees in Egypt,” he declared.

According to the King, the situation had to be handled within Gaza and the West Bank.

Currently, more than 1,000 children in Gaza have been killed and over a million people have been displaced as food, water, and medical supplies run out.

The Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, condemned the strikes that took place at the border crossing on Thursday.  He believed the strikes not only stopped humanitarian aid from reaching the region but also caused a significant threat. President el-Sissi emphasized that it was crucial for the Palestinians to remain in Gaza and persist on their own land, as leaving might result in the complete annihilation of the Palestinian cause.

For the US president, Joe Biden, the Hamas cause does not represent the entire Palestinian people, therefore it would be a mistake for Israel to accommodate Gaza again.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has said 2,000 military personnel were placed on a “prepare to deploy” order for the Middle East if the situation escalated to a critical point. However, the White House did not intend to deploy US combat forces on the ground.

BBC reported that the intelligence chief of the Israel Defense Forces, Maj Gen Aharon Haliva in a letter to troops, wrote that the Military Intelligence Directorate, under his command, had failed to warn of the terror attack carried out by Hamas.

“We failed in our most important mission, and as the head of the Military Intelligence Directorate, I bear full responsibility for the failure,” he said.

Haliva noted that a “deep and comprehensive” investigation, was ongoing however, their duty at the moment was to “fight back and win”.
