Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa’s appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal yesterday by President Goodluck Jonathan was the first in the history of the Nigeria Judiciary. Her notice of appointment has since been forwarded to the Senate for approval.
The President said, her appointment if confirmed by the Senate, conforms to section 238, subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution. Bulkachuwa will therefore be the first woman to head the appeal court.
In a March 13 letter to Senate President David Mark, the President said that the aforementioned section gives him powers to appoint a President of the Court of Appeal acting on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation by the Senate.
“It is my hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration and approval of the distinguished members of the Senate”, the letter read.
