A Tribe Called Judah, the film that broke box office records, starred Jidekene Achufusi of Nollywood, who has discovered the irony of not being nominated for an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) this year.

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, the AMVCA announced nominees for a number of categories, including many renowned performers from films released in the previous year. These announcements came ahead of the major presentation in May.

Funke Akindele’s A Tribe Called Judah captured the attention of viewers and made over ₦1.4 billion at the box office. Although having a major role, Achufusi was not included in the five nominations that the film received on Sunday night.

Nollywood fans swiftly voiced their displeasure with other noteworthy AMVCA omissions from the evening, particularly the removal of Tobi Makinde, Achufusi’s co-star, and Chimezie Imo, who played a pivotal role in Breath of Life.

However, Achufusi is annoyed that supporters haven’t supported him similarly, and on Wednesday, March 27, he expressed his frustration on Twitter.

“After delivering stellar performances in 2 of the top 3 films of 2024 but your snub isn’t trending,” he wrote. He inquired further about Imo and Makinde’s “put for una soup” in light of their noteworthy rejection of the trend.

A Tribe Called Judah nominated Akindele for Best Lead Actress, Feyisayo Oyebisi for Best Makeup, Collins Okoh, Akinlabi Ishola, and Akindele for Best Writing. Timini Egbuson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Along with being nominated for Best Movie, the action drama also received a nomination for Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Breath of Life, Over the Bridge, Blood Vessel, which also starred Achufusi, The Black Book, and Mami Wata.

With a total of 12 nominations, Over the Bridge by Tolu Ajayi received the most of the evening; yet, the film’s star, Ozzy Agu, was not nominated.
