Japan Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 34 as Rescuers Race Against Time

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Japan has risen to 34, while several other people sustained injuries as emergency responders continue an intensive search for survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Rescue teams remained at the disaster sites on Thursday, working around the clock with heavy equipment and search dogs in a race against time to locate more survivors.

Authorities said those rescued from the rubble were receiving medical attention, while survivors were being moved to cool shelters and temporary relief centres to protect them from the ongoing heatwave affecting parts of the country.

Emergency officials warned that the extreme temperatures could worsen the condition of survivors and rescue workers, prompting authorities to provide cooling facilities, drinking water and other emergency support at evacuation centres.

Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as officials continue to assess the full extent of the destruction and account for missing persons.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, follow emergency directives and avoid damaged buildings as aftershocks remain a possibility.

Emergency agencies said they would continue rescue efforts until every affected area had been thoroughly searched, while the government pledged continued support for victims and communities impacted by the disaster.
