Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says his ongoing ordeal has forced him to reassess some of his relationships, particularly with friends and associates who have remained silent or abandoned him during his current troubles.
El-Rufai disclosed this in a statement posted on X, reflecting on the lessons he said he had learnt from the difficult months he has faced.
The former governor is currently facing trial over allegations bordering on money laundering and conversion of public property.
He has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission since February 19, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Reflecting on the reactions of people close to him, El-Rufai said his experience had changed the way he viewed certain relationships.
“Some have expressed concern at the apparent silence, in my present circumstances, of some of my colleagues, friends and family members whom I have publicly stood by or associated closely with in the past,” he said.

He added that the experience could influence how he relates with some people in the future.
“What I learn in difficult times like the past few months may lead me, quietly and without regret, to reconsider the nature of certain relationships and what those that look up to me expect of them,” El-Rufai said.
The former governor, however, said his decision would not be driven by bitterness or a desire to condemn those who had distanced themselves from him.
He said the experience was instead helping him “see people and life more clearly,” suggesting that the lessons from his current predicament could reshape some of his personal relationships.
