A yet-to-be-confirmed number of Nigerian soldiers were reportedly killed on Friday after militants of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a military base in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
Military sources said the insurgents stormed Jakana town in large numbers, firing sporadically before launching an explosives-laden assault on the army outpost along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Road. Several soldiers were killed, while others reportedly fled into nearby bushes.
The attackers were said to have burnt armoured tanks and military vehicles and carted away a large cache of ammunition. Bodies of fallen soldiers were reportedly evacuated to the 7 Division Military Hospital in Maiduguri.
The incident comes days after similar deadly attacks on military bases in Damboa and along the Maiduguri–Damasak axis, highlighting renewed ISWAP offensives in parts of Borno State.
