Israeli Military rescues 2 hostages from Hamas

—

The Israeli military conducted a special operation in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, resulting in the rescue of two hostages who were held captive by Hamas.

The hostages, identified as Fernando Simon Marman and Louis Har, were taken 128 days earlier during an attack by Hamas on Israel. They were transferred to Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer and were reported to be in good medical condition.

The rescue operation was accompanied by Israeli airstrikes in Rafah, targeting areas associated with Hamas.

However, this action led to casualties with Reuters reporting 67 Palestinians killed and Agence France-Presse (AFP) mentioning “around 100” deaths per the airstrikes and widespread destruction in the city.

There are international concerns about the situation, particularly regarding the potential for a ground offensive by Israel in Rafah. The World Health Organization expressed concern about attacks on Rafah, where a significant portion of Gaza’s population had sought refuge.

There have been discussions between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the situation, with Biden urging caution and the need for a credible plan to ensure the safety of civilians in Rafah.

The rescue operation and accompanying airstrikes are part of the broader conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has resulted in significant casualties and destruction on both sides.

Israel-Hamas Conflict Statistics:

Initial Attack on Israel (October 7)

Deaths: 1,200 people killed

Hostages: 250 people (taken hostage)

Subsequent Israeli Strikes (Since October 7):

Deaths: 28,340 Palestinians killed

Injuries: 67,984 Palestinians injured

(Note: Figures provided by the Gaza health ministry, which is controlled by Hamas.)
