Iran has said its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains uncertain as it awaits clear security guarantees from FIFA, raising fresh questions over its scheduled matches in the United States.
Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali affirmed that no response has been received on a formal request still under deliberation to move Iran’s group stage games from the U.S. to Mexico. He observed that although tournament preparations are still in process, the government will make the ultimate decision depending on safety guarantees.
Recent geopolitical tensions and contradictory signals from U.S. officials have exacerbated worries among Iranian authorities; therefore, the News Chronicle understands that the safety of players and officials during the event is pertinent.
Under FIFA rules, host countries should ensure the safety of all participating teams, Donyamali emphasised. He cautioned that Iran’s participation in games on American territory could be reviewed if there were no strong assurances.
Although there is doubt, the Iranian national team keeps training and getting ready for the competition co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June to July 2026. Though officials say participation will ultimately depend on FIFA’s reaction and the degree of security guarantees offered, Iran is now set to play its group stage games in the U.S.
The circumstances increase the strain in the worldwide tournament as organisers strive to guarantee easy attendance for every eligible country.
