The South West geopolitical zone had the highest intracity bus rates among the six geopolitical zones in July 2024, with an average fare of N976.70, exceeding the national average of N942.61.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently released the Transport Fare Watch report for July 2024, which contains the data used here.
As to the NBS research, there was a notable 21.55% decrease in intracity bus prices from the N1,245.04 recorded in July 2023 to the average fare of N992.62 in June, and a 1.60% month-over-month dip in July compared to that in June. Â
With an average ticket of N965.75 in July 2024, the South-South zone trailed closely behind, down 2.01% from N985.55 in June and 32.70% from July 2023.
With an average fare of N945.81 in July 2024—a 2.03% fall from the N965.38 recorded the month before and a 28.62% year-over-year decrease—the North East zone came in third place.
With an average ticket of N938.69, the North West zone came in fourth place, representing a decrease of 30.62% year over year from the N1,352.89 recorded in July 2023 and 1.61% from June 2024.
In July 2024, the South East zone had the lowest intracity bus prices, averaging N901.26 per trip, while the North Central zone came in fifth place, averaging N924.28.

Significant price disparities were found in the NBS Transport Fare Watch report for July 2024, which included a thorough analysis of intracity bus journey tariffs in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
With an average intracity bus fare of N1,457.28 per drop in July 2024, Taraba was the state with the highest reported fare. Ondo State came in second with an average fare of N1,200.94, while Imo State took third place with an average fare of N1,141.67.
In July 2024, the average intracity bus price for the following states was high: Jigawa State (N1,130.56), Plateau State (N1,082.83), Zamfara (N1,078.89), Edo State (N1,070.22), Gombe (N1,061.92), Lagos State (N1,049.49), and Enugu State (N1,040.56).
On the bottom end of the scale, Adamawa State, with an average ticket of N500 for intracity bus trips, recorded the lowest fare in July 2024. Abia State, with N505.35, Sokoto State, with N657.27, and Kano State, with N795, came next.
Ebonyi (N818.56), Benue (N831.89), Bayelsa (N837.89), Borno (N841.96), and Nasarawa State (N851.72) are among the other states with comparatively low fares.
