Instagram Co-founders’ AI News App “Artifact” Announces Shutdown

—

Artifact, the AI-driven news aggregation app launched by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in January 2023, is set to shut down after a brief year-long journey.
In a blog post, Kevin Systrom cited a lack of substantial market opportunity as the primary reason for Artifact’s closure, despite maintaining a dedicated user base.
The app introduced innovative features like AI-powered article summaries, commenting, the ability to flag clickbait, and a Twitter-like posting function.
However, the moderation demands proved challenging for the small 8-person team.
The shutdown process will commence with the disabling of new posts and comments, while existing content will remain visible temporarily.
Core news aggregation services will continue until the end of February.
Expressing optimism about the future, Systrom conveyed his eagerness to explore new ideas within the AI space.
Artifact faced stiff competition in the Twitter-like conversation platform market, coupled with the slow growth of news aggregators, contributing to its struggle in finding a clear product-market fit.
Despite efforts to stand out through AI features, Artifact encountered difficulties in defining its identity coherently, ultimately hindering its ability to scale effectively.
