Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has condemned the deadly attack on Saai Community in Mbajir Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, describing it as a “cowardly and unacceptable” assault on innocent residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, and made available to The News Chronicle, the governor said the attack, which occurred in the early hours of July 1, claimed several lives and left many others with varying degrees of injuries.
Alia said the attack came at a critical period when farmers had returned to their ancestral lands for the planting season, accusing the perpetrators of deliberately targeting the state’s peace and food security.
“This attack is an ugly, cowardly and unacceptable act of violence, particularly at a time when our hardworking farmers have returned to cultivate their lands. These enemies of progress have chosen to strike when crops are developing, and hopes for a bountiful harvest are high,” he said.
The governor extended his condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“My heart goes out to everyone who lost loved ones in this tragic attack, as well as those receiving medical treatment. I pray for their swift and complete recovery. I stand in solidarity with the entire Saai community during this painful period,” he said.
Reassuring residents of Katsina-Ala and Benue State, Alia vowed that his administration would not allow criminal elements to drive people away from their ancestral homes.
“We will not allow the forces of darkness to force you off your lands or crush your spirit. We remain steadfast in building a Benue where peace and justice prevail, and this tragedy will only strengthen our resolve,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state and urged residents not to abandon their communities in the wake of the attack.
To prevent further violence, Alia directed security agencies to deploy additional personnel to Saai and neighboring communities with immediate effect. He also ordered security operatives to launch a manhunt for those responsible and ensure they are arrested and prosecuted.
The governor further instructed security agencies to provide adequate protection for farmers as they continue their agricultural activities.
He appealed to residents to remain calm yet vigilant, urging them to promptly report any suspicious activity to the appropriate security authorities.
Alia reiterated his administration’s determination to restore lasting peace and strengthen security across every part of Benue State.
