Governors from the 19 northern states are meeting in Kaduna to discuss the recent rise in kidnapping, banditry, and other security challenges affecting the region.
The main focus of the meeting is on how to address and curb the growing insecurity across the North.
Governors present include Uba Sani (Kaduna), Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau). Other states were represented by their deputy governors.
Traditional leaders are also part of the meeting, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III. The emergency session is taking place at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in Kaduna.
Although an official communiqué has not yet been released, government sources say the leaders are discussing urgent regional issues, especially the disturbing resurgence of kidnapping and bandit attacks.
According to reports, northern states have recently suffered an increase in attacks on schools, forcing some state governments to temporarily shut down educational institutions.
