INFLATION: MTN, Airtel, Others Hint at Increasing Tariffs

Nigerians across the country may soon wake up to a new tariff hike from network providers. This development follows a stakeholders’ meeting between the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, held on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

The ALTON boss expressed concern about how network operators can continue with the current situation, noting that the existing pricing regime is not sustainable due to high operating costs. Hence, there is a need to review prices in line with current economic realities.

Adebayo also urged the Executive Vice Chairman to address the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) debts owed by Deposit Money Banks (DMBs), which have now risen to N200 billion. He emphasized that debtor banks must face the issue.
