The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has met with Google’s Global Lead for Civic Responsibility, David J. Lopez, in Ottawa, Canada.
The meeting was held on Friday, September 11, on the sidelines of the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections.
The conference brought together election management bodies, technology experts and other stakeholders to examine the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in electoral processes.
Amupitan was accompanied by INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Lawrence Bayode.
The engagement comes amid growing discussions among election management bodies and technology stakeholders on how AI can be used to strengthen electoral processes while mitigating emerging risks.
The discussions are particularly significant as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with technology expected to play an increasingly important role in election administration and information management.
