In Kenya, spit and go to jail

A fine ranging from  Sh10,000 to Sh500,000 or a six to twelve month jail term awaits you if you are caught blowing your nose, spitting or engaging in some unhygienic acts in public place in Nairobi.

This is according to a new law by Nairobi County Assembly. While enacting the Bill on Public Nuisance into law, Nairobi County Deputy Governor Ann Kananu said the new law would go a long way in bringing sanity into the Capital City. The law identifies public spaces as parks, buildings, squares, and open spaces.

“This law is aimed at controlling nuisances in public places and at the same time empower the county authority in carrying out all necessary legal measures to ensure the county is maintained in a clean conducive environment,” said Kananu.

The Bill which is intended to curb irritating acts in public spaces within the capital, was introduced by James Kiriba who is the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Riruta, James Kiriba.

According to sources, part of the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021, is the prohibition of urinating in undesignated spaces, sleeping in kitchens or food stores, among others.
