Eyimba FC coach, Finidi George, has asserted that he’s not pressured to be made the head coach of the Super Eagles permanently during his interview with Modo TV.

About a fortnight ago, the former Ajax and Super Eagles winger was appointed the interim head coach of the Nigeria senior team following the exit of Jose Peseiro, whose contract had ended after the 2023 AFCON.

The Nigeria Football Federation placed a public notification inviting all eligible persons to apply for the vacant post of the Super Eagles head coach, stating March 13 as the deadline for applicants following the discontinuation of Jose Peseiro’s 18 months journey with the team after he guided the team to its glorious AFCON final for the first time since 2013.

Finidi, 52, oversaw the two FIFA International Friendly games Nigeria had on Friday and Tuesday against Ghana and Mali respectively, in Morocco. He guided the team to a resounding victory over the Black Stars of Ghana but lost to the Eagles of Mali—a feat that has caused divergence of opinion among football fans on whether he should be retained as the team’s head coach or released.

During his interview, Finidi highlighted how good he felt after he was chosen to lead the team during the FIFA week:

“I felt really good when I was asked to take charge of the team. I have been with the team for almost two years, I know all the players, their strengths, and their weaknesses, but I am only here to serve Nigeria the way I know how to do stuff.

While stating he’s not under pressure, he disclosed his intention to return to Enyimba FC as he awaits the final decision for the NFF:

“I will just take these two games and go back to my club. Whatever the decision is taken after, so be it. I’m not pressured to say I must get the role permanently.”

Finidi guided Enyimba FC to their 9th Nigeria Professional Football League title last season, which is the most won by any Nigerian club since the inception of the league.
