Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has reacted to growing speculation that he could emerge as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general election, stressing that leadership is not built on perfection.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, monitored by The News Chronicle Dogara said history has shown that nations are built and sustained by ordinary people with flaws, not flawless individuals.
While acknowledging his years of political experience, the former Speaker admitted he is not without shortcomings, insisting that whatever he has achieved is by the grace of God.
Dogara pointed to his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives then the fourth-highest public office in Nigeria as a period that exposed him to critical aspects of governance and responsibilities beyond the reach of many.
“That position exposed me to certain knowledge and experiences that many people may never encounter,” he said.
Reacting directly to questions about a possible vice-presidential ambition, Dogara appeared cautious, saying he does not consider himself fully prepared for such a role.
“Honestly, I don’t know why I’m being asked these questions, but I don’t think I’m ever prepared for anything,” he said. “Everything I am is by the grace of God. I may have a rich pedigree, having served as Speaker in a country of about 200 million people, but I know I am not perfect.”
