In a surprising disclosure, it has been revealed that Taraba State is facing a significant issue with illegal drug use, particularly among individuals aged sixteen to forty-six. This revelation comes from Nanzing Sallah, the state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Taraba council.

Sallah pointed out that commonly abused drugs in the region include Marijuana (Cannabis Sativa), Codeine, Tramadol, and Methamphetamine (Ice). He attributed this concerning trend to the activities of drug traffickers who exploit the state as a transit point. Moreover, Sallah observed a connection between the high rate of criminal activities in the state and drug abuse.

Highlighting the NDLEA’s dedication to addressing this issue, Sallah reported numerous arrests and the confiscation of illicit drugs in the state. He commended the state government for its commitment to establishing a rehabilitation center, emphasizing the crucial role of such facilities in helping victims recover from drug abuse through counseling and rehabilitation.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the media in the fight against drug abuse, Sallah welcomed the Nigeria Union of Journalists, expressing gratitude for their timely visit.

He pledged the NDLEA’s commitment to collaborating with the NUJ, believing that such a partnership would help publicize the agency’s activities and contribute to restoring the state’s tarnished image.

Earlier in the meeting, the NUJ state chairman, Mathew Jen, conveyed the journalists’ intent to collaborate with the NDLEA. Applauding the agency’s efforts to combat drug abuse in the state, he assured the NDLEA of the journalists’ commitment to providing extensive coverage, with the shared goal of achieving a drug-free Taraba State.

He made an earnest appeal to the young members of society, urging them to refrain from the perilous habit of smoking due to its severe implications on their well-being.

Furthermore, he implored them to redirect their focus towards pursuing education, emphasizing the importance of returning to school as a constructive alternative to engaging in unlawful activities within the state.
