Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has threatened to seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if anything goes wrong during the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davido made the remarks during a livestream hosted by content creator Carter Efe, where he spoke about his interest in politics and his concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
The singer said he would consider venturing into politics once he is convinced that elections in Nigeria are transparent and voters are allowed to freely choose their leaders.
“Until there’s transparency, then I can go ahead with politics because nobody can beat me in any election,” Davido said.
He maintained that he was confident of winning any election conducted fairly, arguing that Nigerians should be allowed to vote freely and have their votes accurately counted.
Davido said concerns over electoral transparency were among the reasons he had yet to enter politics despite his interest in public affairs.
Turning specifically to the forthcoming Osun governorship election, the singer said he was waiting to see how the exercise would be conducted.
“I want to see what they are going to do in Osun. We are waiting,” he said.
He then issued an unusual warning, saying he would tag and call Trump if he became dissatisfied with the conduct of the election.
“I’ll tag Trump, I’ll call Trump, everybody. If they still don’t see anything, I’ll go in front of the White House and say, ‘Help us,’” he said.
Davido said he was not joking about his plan, suggesting that he expected his concerns to reach the US president.
“Trump will just say, ‘I think there’s a Nigerian artiste sending me a message. Don’t worry, my message will be delivered,’” he added.
The singer, who has openly shown interest in Nigeria’s political affairs, concluded by urging those involved in the Osun election to allow the people to freely determine their next governor.
“Leave Osun alone oo, leave it,” he warned.
