The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State has described the process that culminated in the recent nomination and endorsement of the former Interior Minister, Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho as consensus candidate as valid and a democratic exercise that ultimately complied with the provisions of the party’s constitution.
State Chairman, Peter Ezeobi, a lawyer, who disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri while reacting to a statement purportedly issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Mgbeahuruike, disassociating the party from the development.
He maintained that Iheanacho’s endorsement as the party’s consensus candidate by majority of the stakeholders including APGA lawmakers, members of the State Working Committee, Zonal and Local Government chairmen remains a good omen and a step in the right direction as the party prepares to reclaim the governorship position in 2015.
While disclosing that the decision had also been transmitted to the national leadership of the party for ratification and approval in line with APGA’s constitution, Ezeobi added that the purported statement by the publicity secretary was not authorised by the leadership of the party in Imo as such remains a mere personal opinion.
His words: “The recent endorsement of Capt. Ihenacho by stakeholders of the party is not only conventional but legal, democratic and in line with APGA constitution on nomination of a candidate for governorship election. Recall that when members of the National Working Committee of our party visited us recently, they advised us to go for a consensus candidate. It was based on this advice that our leaders nominated and endorsed Capt Ihenacho and forwarded same to me as the State Chairman.
“Accordingly, I have also forwarded the decision to the National Working Committee in line with APGA’s Constitution. The endorsement, therefore, still stands and remains valid. The rest now remains for the leaders of the party at the national level to decide on. However, this does not foreclose primary election if need be.”
While reiterating the commitment of the party to carry everyone along in its quest to salvage and restore Imo on the path of economic growth and development, the party chieftain added that the party is ever determined to ensure that only credible and acceptable candidates are fielded to ensure total victory for APGA come 2015.
